Overview of the Issue

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has demanded that tech giant Apple eliminate its artificial intelligence feature, known as Apple Intelligence, from iPhones. This request arises from concerns regarding the feature's potential harm to journalism.

Inaccurate Reporting Concerns

  • The AI feature aims to summarize breaking news alerts but has been reported to generate entirely false claims.
  • One significant instance cited was an inaccurate report that misattributed a false story about the suicide of Luigi Mangione to the BBC.

NUJ’s Statement

NUJ General Secretary Laura Davison expressed urgency in the call for action, stating:

“Apple must act swiftly, removing Apple Intelligence. At a time where access to accurate reporting has never been more important, the public must not be placed in a position of second-guessing the accuracy of news they receive.”

Apple's Response

In response to the criticisms, Apple has announced plans to update the AI feature to clarify when notifications are summarized using AI. However, many journalists believe this solution does not adequately address the problem of false reporting.
