Research Grant Overview
Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) has received an $8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense for a project centered on advanced data analysis and artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative, titled "CREDIT+: Advancing Data Analysis for Mission-Critical Applications in the Era of Artificial Intelligence", will be spearheaded by Dr. Lijun Qian of the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering.
Project Objectives and Goals
- The project aims to enhance PVAMU’s research capacity in AI and big data analytics.
- It focuses on training students for career opportunities in AI and data analytics.
- The initiative aligns with PVAMU’s institutional goals to expand its research and education landscape.
Areas of Focus
The new funding will further the work of the Center of excellence in Research and Education for big military Data InTelligence (CREDIT Center), founded with a previous $6 million DOD grant. Research will target:
- Large Language Model Enhanced Data Management: Utilizing AI tools for data gathering and analysis.
- Mission Planning: Incorporating AI and mean-field game theory for complex operations.
- Efficient Edge Computing: Innovating AI data processing on limited-resource devices.
- Explainable AI: Developing techniques for clearer AI-driven decision-making.
- Real-World Testing: Applying research findings to practical scenarios.
Impact on Military and Educational Outcomes
The CREDIT Center aims to support military operations by enhancing data analytics from various sources to improve operational decisions. Collaborations with the University of Nevada Reno and the University of Southern California will pave the way for further developments in AI-enabled data analysis systems.
Additionally, the project emphasizes the importance of student education, especially for those from underrepresented communities, by creating new courses in AI, machine learning, and launching a new master’s degree in data science and engineering.
Future Outlook
Dr. Qian envisions that the CREDIT Center will continue to play a significant role in AI and data science research and education at PVAMU, supporting the growing relevance of these fields in tomorrow’s workforce.
